A FREE family forum in Mandurah on April 17 has been organised by the South Metropolitan Community Drug Service to explore the impact of alcohol and drugs on mental health.
Interested people are encouraged to attend the all-day event, which will feature professional speakers including Dr Jonson Moyle, a clinical neuropsychologist.
Palmerston Association’s community development officer Sandra Harris said the family forums aimed to provide resources, referral and education.
“There is often a large amount of blame, shame and intense fear associated with drug abuse,” she said. “We recognise that families need support, and they need to know what resources are out there.”
Lunch will be provided as well as morning and afternoon tea, and families will have the opportunity to share their personal stories if they wish.
Serenity Lodge choir will perform at the close of the forum.
A new family support group starting soon in Mandurah will also support families.
The group will meet on Thursdays, commencing on April 22 at the South Metropolitan Community Drug Service office, Tuckey Street, Mandurah.
The Mandurah support group follows a successful group already operating in Rockingham.
The family forum will take place at the AFA Club and Function Centre, RAAFA Estate, 41 Portrush Parade, Meadow Springs, Mandurah, from 9am to 4.30pm.
Registration and coffee is at 8.30am. RSVP is essential.
