MIDLAND Men’s Shed will be built on solid foundations after more than 30 men attended a meeting facilitated by the City of Swan last month.
Midvale business Your DIY Spot has offered to close its workshop one day each week to provide a meeting place for the group.
Owner Colin Salt said the workshop would help the group take greater ownership of their shed, when a permanent location was found, by allowing them to construct it themselves.
“They’ve got space and access to the tools here, all they need now is the desire and passion; there’s some real skill and knowledge in in that group,” he said.
“I’d also love to get some of the semi-retirees involved here as mentors of younger people.”
Your DIY Spot is a fully-equipped workshop in Midvale, which people can hire to complete their projects, watch demonstrations, receive mentoring or place orders for manufacturing.
Night classes are also offered to provide small groups with a hands-on introduction to welding.
City of Swan chief executive Mike Foley said the Bellevue Baptist Church had informally offered land in Bellevue for the shed in addition to the use of a meeting place and computer lab.
“However, a final agreement has yet to be reached in relation to the practical matters of building a permanent structure,” he said.
Mr Foley said next steps would include the formation of an incorporated association to obtain funding, building a shed and raising community awareness of the organisation.
The next meeting is scheduled for January 13 at the Bellevue Baptist Church.
