THE Vintage Sports Car Club of WA is optimistic for the future of Brabham Reserve, and hopes that a grievance delivered by West Swan MLA Rita Saffioti in Parliament last week will work in its favour.

Ms Saffioti raised the future of the Caversham Raceway in Parliament on Wednesday asking that the plans for the area be revisited to preserve more of the raceway and the historic transmitter buildings.

Ms Saffioti said that Lands Minister Brendan Grylls gave his commitment that the State Government will take another look at the plans to see if other options would better suit the area and its residents.

VSCC member and City of Swan councillor Ted Williams said they were only asking that the developers reconsider the future of the historic reserve and hoped the track could be preserved for future generations to enjoy.

“We are optimistic that this initiative may be the impetus to retaining the historic circuit and retaining the last of the air field racing circuits for history,” he said.

Cr Williams said that a fair held at the raceway last month attracted more than 5000 people.

Ms Saffioti said the Albion townsite presents an opportunity to create a unique development incorporating the rich history of the area.

“The Vintage Sports Car Club has put in a lot of effort and time into preparing a plan that would incorporate this motor racing history into the new town site development,” Ms Saffioti said.

“It would be very sad to see this part of our history bowled over for housing – when smart planning could incorporate the history of the site with more housing.”

Both parties are also hopeful that the State Government will also consider naming the new suburb Brabham, after Sir Jack Brabham who raced at the circuit in the 50s and 60s.
