Men ‘gassed’: Union

FIVE workers at Tiwest Kwinana Pigment Plant received medical treatment after being exposed to noxious gas released from leaking equipment on Monday.

The sub-contractors working on upgrades to the Pigment Plant were exposed to toxic gas, believed to be titanium tertrachloride, after it was alleged a flange that had been leaking and repaired with a wrapping, released a plume. One contractor was taken to hospital for precautionary reasons due to pre-existing health problems.

CFMEU (Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union) organiser Paul Ferreira said he was told nine workers were “gassed” and about 30 others who were exposed chose not to be treated.

Mr Ferreira said one worker was so panicked by the gas plume he jumped from a six-metre high elevator platform to escape the fumes which could cause burns to the mouth and lungs if inhaled.

He said about 40 workers in the area fled the site because of the plume, and on Tuesday night another leak released the gas onto nearby workers.

CFMEU, CEPU and AMWU representatives met on Tuesday morning with workers who voted not to work in units 200 and 300 because of other alleged incidents, including a suspected “gassing” two weeks ago.

“Our people are ready and willing workers but refuse to work in unsafe areas. Why didn’t they (Tiwest) listen to our calls in January?” he asked.

A spokeswoman said Tiwest was aware of workers’ concerns but the company continually maintained the safety and integrity of the plant to a high standard.

Monday’s incident was not a reportable one but the company still advised WorkSafe and The Dangerous Goods Safety Branch.

“Tiwest takes the health and safety of employees and contractors very seriously, and will continue to work with all stakeholders to ensure we maintain a safe working environment,” she said.
