CHIROPRACTIC students Janice Chan, of Dianella, and Luke Banch, of Maylands, made tracks to Kununurra this week.

Part of a group from Murdoch University, the duo will spend six days at Ord Valley Aboriginal Health Service providing free treatment.

The university has run the program for four years, with students paying for travel, accommodation and meals.

Ms Chan travelled to India for two weeks late last year, also a self-funded visit, with 19 fellow students and nine registered chiropractors, treating disadvantaged people in areas like Siliguri in West Bengal.

“Really, really busy… I would have helped treat about 200 people in that time,” she said of the trip.

“It was great to work with chiropractors who had different experiences and techniques – it was the most rewarding experience I’ve had.”

Ms Chan said she looked forward to the Kununurra visit, and was keen to help rural communities and indigenous people.

Murdoch University senior lecturer Bruce Walker said the the trip was to build long-term relationships with Aboriginal people in the hopes of delivering ongoing care.

“These final year students are capable of making a general health assessment but will concentrate on muscle and bone problems, such as back, neck, arm, leg, shoulder, hip and knee pain,” he said.

Other groups will visit regional areas like Geraldton, Carnarvon and Meekatharra.
