We all know that one of the most important symbols at a wedding is the cutting of the wedding cake. It is usually the final ritual of the evening that confirms the newly created bond between a man and a woman.Unfortunately though, not all marriages survive. Particularly in these modern times with fast paced, high stress lifestyles and quick divorces. In fact divorce is now so ingrained in our society that it has developed important rituals of its own. One of these rituals is the divorce cake.Like the wedding cake they can be quite extravagant and very expensive or they can be simple, home made affairs to symbolise the important day. Sometimes they look just like a wedding cake with multiple tiers and miniature bride and groom figures. Other examples will have simple written messages to mark the significance of the occasion.Whatever your own feelings about the practice of divorce may be, there is no denying that it has become an important ritual in modern society, and like other important rituals, it needs its own symbolism. So I have collected together a visual feast of divorce cakes for your perusal and if you happen to be going through one at the moment maybe they will provide some inspiration for your own 'big day'.
